Midland woman charged with raping minor, having child claims she is the one who was raped

 

A Mid-Michigan woman is charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct after allegedly having a sexual relationship with a minor.

Midland County Prosecutor J Brooks said Aspen Amazi was 18-years-old when she started her relationship with a 14-year-old.

The two continued their relationship despite the minor’s parents warning them against it.

MIDLAND, MI – Prosecutors allege two Midland teens engaged in a sexual relationship for nearly two years, culminating in the female getting pregnant and delivering a daughter.

The teens’ relationship now over, there’s a court battle over custody of the child and the girl is facing a sexual assault charge since she was considered an adult at the time and the male was a minor. She claims the younger male assaulted her.

The boy testified he did not rape Amazi.

On July 17, the court ordered them to share joint custody and share parenting time.

Amazi objected, filing a motion on July 19.

Amazi is represented by Midland attorney Leland A. Burton, whom MLive could not reach for comment.

Prosecutors in Amazi’s criminal case offered a plea deal that if she pleads guilty or no contest to an added count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, they’ll dismiss the third-degree charge and recommend her maximum incarceration be one year, to be served in the local jail.

Amazi on Aug. 27, rejected the offer. Her case is now set for trial before Midland County Circuit Judge Michael J. Beale on Sept. 26.

Records indicate the child was born on March 9. On March 27, Amazi appeared in Midland County District Court for arraignment on one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, a 15-year felony.

The arraigning judge freed Amazi on a $50,000 personal recognizance bond.

Court-ordered DNA tests indicated the boy was the father of the baby girl.

In late June, attorney Ghazey H. Aleck II filed motions on the teen-father’s behalf seeking custody of the baby girl, stating Amazi was withholding the child.

A July 15 Friend of the Court hearing saw both Amazi and the teen-father testify. The teen-father said he wanted Amazi to have no contact with their daughter.
